CMRL Passenger Mobile App – Enhancing Urban Mobility Through Design

As part of a UX initiative for Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), The goal was to create a seamless, user-friendly experience that empowers commuters with real-time information and effortless travel planning.

Problem Statement:

Metro passengers in Chennai faced challenges with fragmented information, long queues for ticketing, and lack of clarity in route planning. Existing solutions lacked a cohesive digital experience, resulting in commuter frustration and inefficiencies in daily travel.

UX Solution :

To address these issues, I designed a mobile-first solution with the following key features:

  • Find My Route: A smart route planner that suggests optimal travel paths based on user input.

  • Wallet & Ticket Booking: A secure, integrated wallet system for cashless transactions and quick ticket purchases.

  • Live Train Timings: Real-time updates on train schedules and platform information.

  • Minimalist UI: A clean, accessible interface designed for quick navigation and reduced cognitive load.

User research, journey mapping, and iterative prototyping were central to the design process, ensuring the app met the needs of diverse passenger personas.

Challenge Handled:

  • Data Accuracy: Ensuring real-time train data was reliable and synced with backend systems.

  • User Diversity: Designing for a wide demographic, including non-tech-savvy users and multilingual audiences.

  • Scalability: Creating a design system that could adapt to future features like metro card recharge and multi-modal transport integration.

  • Security & Compliance: Implementing secure wallet and ticketing flows while adhering to local data protection norms.
